Towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely pull behind it. It's one of the most important specs for truck and SUV shoppers, and it's not one-size-fits-all.

**How It Works**
Manufacturers test each model and configuration (engine, transmission, axle, brakes) to determine a max towing weight. Chevrolet's light-duty Silverado 1500 can tow up to 14,500 lbs; heavy-duty 2500 HD and 3500 HD versions go higher. SUVs like the Tahoe and Suburban also have solid capacities.

**Payload vs. Towing**
Payload is weight your truck bed can carry. Towing is what you pull behind. They're separate limits-maxing one doesn't mean you can max the other.

**Practical Shopping**
Know your trailer's dry weight, plus cargo. Add a margin for safety. The right truck depends on whether you're towing regularly or occasionally, and how heavy your load is.
